All About Schools In Utah

One big factor families take into consideration when moving is finding the best schools in a particular area. Other than word of mouth, there is a great resource you can use online called GreatSchools.Org! It is a free source for school ratings. GreatSchools.Org is an independent non-profit that “aims to provide a well-rounded picture of how effectively each school serves its students.”

Schools have a rating from 1-10 depending on a number of factors: the Student Progress Rating or Academic Progress Rating, College Readiness Rating, Equity Rating, and Test Score Rating. More information on the rating system here

Here in Utah we have a many schools that participate in Dual Language Immersion programs, where students beginning in 1st grade will learn English and another language. They spend about half of their day learning the second language.  You can go here to see what languages are spoken in the different school districts. At my son’s school they are learning Chinese. Other languages being taught around the state are Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Russian. If you are looking to expand your student’s knowledge and language skills attending a school that participates in the Dual Language Immersion Program might be worth looking into.

There are many specialized schools in Utah, sometimes referred to as Special Purpose Schools. One such school is the Dan Peterson School in American Fork. It is designed to helped students with disabilities have a normal school experience while also getting specialized attention. There are three locations of the Utah Schools for the Deaf & Blind- Ogden, Salt Lake City & Springville. The Springville location was built in 2020 and is a beautiful, modern building just about 5 minutes from the freeway making it nice for those who need to drive in.

Whatever your family’s needs or wherever you move to in Utah, there is sure to be an education system to fit your needs.  Feel free to reach out if you have questions about schools, relocating to Utah or anything else!
